Meet James from L.I.F.E. Academy in Gilbert, AZ
April 04, 2025
In support of Autism Acceptance Month, we would like to introduce you to James who is a 9-year-old in 3rd grade at L.I.F.E Academy in Gilbert, AZ. He was diagnosed with Autism and ADHD at 2.5 years old. To date, he hasn’t quite learned how to fully speak vocally but is able to use a speech device to speak. James also shows people what he needs or wants. He has been at L.I.F.E for the past four years, at his prior school he wasn’t able to receive all the services he needed. At L.I.F.E, James receives all his therapies, and his teachers collaborate with his physical and occupational therapists to manage his needs and work with him on common goals.
While at school, James enjoys using the sensory gym, playground with swings, and splash pad. He also enjoys being around his teachers and peers, as well as doing karate and attending music class. When he is at home, James enjoys looking at books, watching shows, playing outside, jumping on the trampoline, water play activities, trying different foods and spending time with his mom, dad, and 14-year-old sister, Janelle.
James’ mom Alexis shared with us, “The Arizona Leadership Foundation scholarship has impacted our family by helping financially and allowing James to get the best education and resources possible through a great school.”
From Sara Yarn and Bardy Haugo, two of James’ teachers at L.I.F.E. about James:
We wanted to take a moment to celebrate James for all the hard work and progress that he has made this year! It has been amazing to watch his confidence grow as he takes on new challenges with determination. His ability to navigate social situations, express himself, and embrace learning has truly blossomed. Every day, he shows resilience and a willingness to try, even when things feel tough. His problem-solving skills have improved, and he is finding new ways to communicate and engage with the world around him. The patience and effort that he puts into his work does not go unnoticed, and we are so proud of his accomplishments. His kindness and unique perspective bring so much joy to the classroom. We love seeing the pride on his face when he achieves something new! This progress is a testament to his hard work and the support they receive from home and school. We can’t wait to see what more he will accomplish—congratulations on an amazing journey of growth!
