August Family Spotlight: Meet the Humphreys’ Twins

August 24, 2023

Meet the Humphreys’ twins from Phoenix Country Day School (PCDS) in Phoenix. Both brothers just graduated in the spring of 2023. Caleb is heading to Cornell University and Richard is heading to Carnegie Melon. They have been raised by their single mom, Mozette. She is very thankful for the Arizona Leadership Foundation scholarships that have given her boys this amazing education experience.

The boys moved from public school to PCDS in high school. While at their public school, they were on the Phoenix Swim Club team and the practices moved to PCDS. They made friends with other students at PCDS and decided they wanted to attend high school there. Mozette shared her thoughts about their education: “Arizona Leadership Foundation made their dream high school a reality, which in turn made their dream colleges a reality. We can’t thank ALF enough.”

Caleb told us that having the special resources at PCDS helped his educational journey. His two favorite subjects at school are physics and Mandarin. He is slated to study environmental engineering at Cornell. He was involved in club and high school swim team, track and field, gardening and musical theater.

Richard also likes physics and is planning to study engineering as well at Carnegie Melon. Like his brother, he was on the club and high school swim team, is into video games, gardening and plays the alto saxophone.

Both boys also participate in the 32nd Street Jazz Band and performed at the New Orleans, San Francisco and Scottsdale Jazz Festivals.

Mozette is beaming with pride when she talks about both boys’ accomplishments both in and out of the classroom. One very interesting thing she shared is that the family lives in Laveen and the boys started a small farm at their house. They sell the excess product at the farmer’s market and through distributors, as well as sell and donate the food to local food banks to help combat hunger in their area. Caleb has given workshops at PCDS about agricultural sustainability.

PCDS’ school administrator had this to say about the brothers, “On the stage, in the pool, with the robotics team, and of course, in the classroom, Richard and Caleb took advantage of every opportunity during their time at PCDS. We are grateful Arizona Leadership Foundation’s scholarship program helped make their participation in our community possible.”
